is an independent federal government agency that receives overall foreign policy guidance from the Secretary of State that supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance. It provides assistance in four regions of the world: Sub-Saharan Africa; Asia and the Near East; Latin America and the Caribbean, and; Europe and Eurasia.www.usaid.gov
Population Services International (PSI) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. (1970) with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning, and social marketing of maternal and child health products and services. PSI has health promotion projects in over 65 countries, employing over 8000 staff around the globe deploying commercial marketing strategies to promote health products, services and other types of healthy behavior. Through its interventions in 2009 alone, PSI averted an estimated 149,000 HIV infections, more than 17,000 maternal deaths, more than 3.5 million unintended pregnancies, nearly 40 million malaria episodes, nearly 310,000 malaria deaths, over 7.4 million diarrhea cases, and over 11,000 diarrhea deaths. In addition, roughly 23,000 patients were treated for TB. PSI has eight years experience implementing HIV prevention programs in the region. With a focus on measurable health impact, PSI has achieved behavior change in CAR through strategic, multi-channel outreach programs tailored to MARPs. www.psi.org
During the last 50 years, Project HOPE — Health Opportunities for People Everywhere — has worked in more than 100 countries, distributed more than $2 billion in medicine and medical supplies, and trained more than two million healthcare workers. Project HOPE in Central Asia has expertise in conducting quality TB control programs to reduce the burden and prevent the spread of TB. During its 15 year presence in the region, Project HOPE has impacted almost 90% of CAR populations. www.projecthope.org
AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) is a Dutch, non-governmental, humanitarian, public health organization working in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS using innovative and proactive approaches and by actively seeking international and regional exchanges. Together with and for people living with HIV and affected communities, as well as non-governmental and governmental partners, AFEW conducts and supports programs aimed at the prevention of HIV; universal access to treatment, care and support; and advocacy on the most pressing issues to alleviate the burden of the epidemic in the EECA region. An expert in improving access of high risk groups to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, AFEW has seven years experience implementing programs in CAR. www.afew.org
Created in 2004, the Kazakh Union of People Living with HIV draws upon the knowledge and skills of nine local organizations providing HIV care and treatment services to people living with HIV/AIDS. For four years, the organization has been helping improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS by providing psychological, social, and legal assistance and advocating increased access to treatment and diagnostic services in the Republic of Kazakhstan. www.plwha.kz
